A Chilling Encounter My Uncle Experienced while night fishing near The Gulf of Boné

2022.01.23 06:24 feliciodario A Chilling Encounter My Uncle Experienced while night fishing near The Gulf of Boné

I just shared this story on the Campfire Corner thread but I guess I'll just share it here as well because why not?
This happened to my uncle Michael one night when he went boat-fishing with a friend in the narrow but arguably deep waters of Buton Passage, as it was known back then. He has told me many stories of his past fishing trips many times before, some are downright hilarious, exciting and even creepy. But this one in particular has always stuck with me.
My uncle Michael was a young police officer of Christian Minahasan heritage back in the 70s, an era of outrageous psychedelic oddities worldwide and the time when being a police officer fresh out of high school in this country itself meant you were probably just as poor as a farmer or a fisherman. He had left his beloved hometown of Tomohon to pursue his dream of joining the military in Makassar and was sent off to Buton Island, South-East Sulawesi right away instead.
On his days off, he went out boat-fishing with his equally impoverished and lanky fishing pal Markus, a man of Torajan ethnic background with an accent too thick for his own good and an unhealthy inclination to blurt out the local curse word cukimai whenever he's upset or too excited. It had always been just the two of them, sitting with their backs againts each other on a small worn-out boat they had rented from one of the fishermen in the village, waiting in silence for hours for some mindless fish to take the hook, a long boring activity called 'still fishing' (just letting the hook dangle instead of pulling it through the water).
They never talked much during those fishing trips, he said. What was there to talk about anyway while they drifted the night away waiting? What's the point? The collective sentiment in their love for therapeutic fishing had been nothing short of a testimony to the hardship of their lives. Both had also failed to heed their wives' warnings about the strait's purportedly haunted reputation and how people had disappeared mysteriously there for years. They simply brushed it off as these women being overly worried that their husbands were going to die on them.
One night, out of boredom, the two of them decided to cross the strait and impulsively headed out into the open sea to try their luck as they had only had a couple of nibbles for hours. Up to this day, my uncle has always blamed Markus for that unnervingly idiotic decision.
"I told him it might not be a good idea for occasional anglers like us to venture far out beyond the comforts of the strait in the middle of the night on a small wooden dilapidated boat only large enough to carry a maximum of two stupid dickheads huddled together on it. But no … we had to get out of the strait because there were more fish in the deeper parts of the water. More fish my ass!"
On the other hand, his friend whom growing up I always referred to as 'Uncle Markus' (even though I had never met him) also insisted that it had been my uncle's idea to dare the open waters just so the other fishermen around would stop harassing them for being such a pair of salted pussies, and laughing at their bright orange life jackets donned at my uncle's insistence, courtesy of his fear of drowning.
As soon as the town and harbor shrank away from them, with the lights from the houses along the coastline blending together into strings of sparkling dots, they knew they had ventured far enough. Then just like nights before, a rehearsed routine of throwing their baits into the water and waiting in silence began once again. Still Fishing, it was.
It had only been half an hour of only silence and darkness since they had passed through the mouth of the strait which curved due West and merged with The Gulf of Boné when my uncle heard it. A loud splash in the water only a few miles southward from where they were which harshly knocked him out of his reverie. He turned his head towards where it was coming from and saw the massive silhouette of something dark and terrible gliding back under the inky surface, disturbing the surface in its wake.
"Did you hear that? Did you see that" He asked the snoring man behind him in a hushed voice.
"Why are you whispering? I'm partially deaf. Speak up!" said the latter who had been half asleep and was yanked back into the quiet dark world around them. His gaze strayed off to the side blindly. The ambience of their surroundings, with the dimmed glow of their lantern distorted by sea mist and the soft lapping of gentle waves at the sides of their boat, not to mention how freezing cold it had been that night, had serenaded him half into a deep slumber.
"Did you see that just now?" repeated my uncle.
"See what?"
"Something just splashed out of the water. Now it's gone."
"We're in the middle of the sea, Michael. Of course shit is going to jump out of the water now and then." Markus groaned exhaustedly.
"No. I don't think it's a fish."
"Then what was it? A friggin' mermaid?" Markus teased the other man as he started to giggle like a little boy.
"Let's just go back.” My uncle ignored him. “Tide's rising anyway. The quay will be underwater in a few hours."
"What? We've only just arrived."
"Yes and now we're leaving." My uncle snapped at him.
"I don't want to … I ..." Markus' voice trailed off. But the look of utter terror on my uncle's face told him something ominous underwater had indeed made its presence known to them.
"Well, I won't beg you to come with me and you can come back here all by yourself after you drop me off back at the quay."
"What's the matter? What's wrong?"
"Can't you see what's wrong? There's something in the water. Something that tells me we shouldn't be here."
"What? What is it? Cukimai, tell me! What did you see for God's sake?"
My uncle did not answer. He grabbed an oar and started to row the boat back towards the mouth of the strait.
"Jesus, Michael! What the fuck is wrong with you? I can't go back home right now. My wife doesn't like me going out fishing and shit and she won't open the door for me."
In a distant way my uncle had always registered that it's not that Markus was stupid or as clueless as he had always appeared to be in the first place, if any, his wife was to blame, for always treating him like a bag of regrets and past mistakes she could never get over and always whined about.
My uncle wouldn't listen to him though. He just kept rowing and rowing in silence until they arrived at the partially submerged old quay an hour and a half later. It was only when he already felt the comforting solid earth beneath his feet that he told Markus what he had seen out there in the middle of the sea.
It was the gigantic head of a massive beast bigger than anything he had ever seen before in his life. A beast known locally as The Embu. Setan Laut. The Devil of The Sea.

2022.01.23 06:24 Bryson837 Ender 3 v2 Hotend Fan Replacement

How to you guys feel about this fan to replace the hot end fan? Will it move enough air to be sufficient? It's only ```20 dbA-ish so its super quiet (main reason I'm asking). I know its 5v but I have some buck converters lying around so that's not a problem. (unless it is then someone tell me please) If someone has a different/better fan upgrade please let me know. I kind of just want the fan to be drop in but if someone has a good print file for a bigger fan I am open to it. I'm new 3d printing so I just want to make sure I do it right.
Thanks in advance.

2022.01.23 06:24 Lifedeath999 What is the truest discworld quote?

What quote, in a series full of wonderful quotes, do you think is the most “true” or “applicable to real life.” I haven’t done a review or anything, but the quote that made me think of this was “if You make glass glitter sufficiently, sometimes it looks more like a diamond, than a diamond does.” It just struck a chord with me.

I don’t feel like typing a long get to know me type of thing so I’ll just tell you the basics: I’m 14f, I’m from the west coast usa, I’m very tired but can’t sleep, and I’m home alone for the weekend so I’m extremely bored. Hmu with something interesting and not just “hey” or “how are you?” Let’s skip the small talk lol

Course Cyclocross first came to Hoogerheide in 2000, a special race for Adrie van der Poel who was retiring from a very successful career, so his entire family got to go on stage with him. His boys seemed to like that as Mathieu got on the podium 5 more times as the winner in more recent years.
The course is the same as previous years, lots of up and down and sideways over the Brabantse Wal and the big set of stairs in the middle of the course, but just very fast overall. It's been one of the more exciting races as it holds its spot as the World Cup Finale just before the Worlds. However, with the big changes this year, going from 8 to 16 races, not much of that excitement is left, as Dutch national coach Gerben de Knegt told Wielerflits:

You can see the devaluation of the World Cup happening ow. In Flamanville a lot of the big name riders, especially in the women's field, weren't there. I understand why they picked a training camp over a World Cup in France with the Worlds coming up. But Annemarie Worst is also sitting out Hoogerheide. She's got nothing more to ride for here and is going all in on the Worlds. You can see the last race is less important now. Previously, people raced for the overall win in Hoogerheide, but that's been decided in all categories already. Because of that, the race has lost some of its prestige. I was talking to a lady from the UCI in Flamanville. She was a little disappointed there were so few riders there. I told her that was kind of the UCI's own fault by including so many races. And everyone is telling them that, but the UCI isn't listening.
Women's race Almost a full house today, we're missing Worst (and Rochette and Honsinger), but everyone else is here today. Vos' first podium in Hoogerheide was in January 2004 when she was 17, I think everyone else on that results sheet has long since retired. But she'll be challenging for her 9th podium finish, and 4th World Cup win of the season today. And she's the only woman who has been able to beat Brand since 27 November last year (what a streak) so we'll see whether she can put up a fight today. All three U23 World title hopefuls are starting today, and one of Van Empel, Pieterse and Van Anrooij have been up there almost every race this season, so I expect they'll be there today.
Men's race Pidcock has a 100% win rate in CX races in countries with red, white and blue flags this season. Let's see if it stays that high after today. The overall World Cup win is firmly in Iserbyt's pocket, but there might be a bit of a race for 2nd place as Vanthourenthout is only 8 points ahead of Aerts, and Aerts has the better track record on this course, finishing 2nd behind Mathieu van der Poel twice in the last two editions. With the U23 and junior races cancelled due to corona measures, the U23 riders are taking to the main field, which also seems to mean no David van der Poel (you'd almost hope the race having your name would give you a bit of priority on the start list).

2022.01.23 06:24 DoubleEdg3dSword My Origins TKL is typing random letters on keypress

currently have a replacement keyboard plugged in because my hyperx is one is completely unusable
Buttons like TAB, Shift, CTRL either don't do anything or they type out a lot of letters at once on keypress. For example if I'd press tab it would type something like "qwertyuio01235l;'0"
Regular keys work for a little bit after plugging in the keyboard, but then they start typing weird letters after a while, for example if i press "a" it would type "ä", like as if my right alt key was stuck.
I don't know what seems to be causing this. Never had this happen on any keyboard before. It also happened for no reason. One second it worked, the next it started doing this.
Any help?

2022.01.23 06:24 IamBetterThanNinja Pokemon trainer is so bullshit

This character doesn’t get enough hate. Squirtle is fucking impossible to hit, has literally no start up or end lag so squirtles just mash and it works, hits you once and true combos u for 30 seconds until ur at 70%.
Ivysaur razor leaf is annoying af to get through, his up and down air hitboxes are so big juggling and edgeguarding is so free. Up B is so bullshit it has so much killpower for its speed and range and can kill confirm way too easily at way too early percents AND it hits you through the stage from below ledge so its impossible to ledge trap.
Charizard is the least worst but still has bowsers stupid flame breath, has cloud bair but stronger and more range somehow, is a superheavy and has stupid killpower.
I can’t believe this character lost so much popularity pt is broken.

2022.01.23 06:24 Ser_Dariss About running the Reqtificator again, after adding some armor and weapon mods.

I recently installed a mod pack which is based around Requiem (Wildlander). I don't know much about xEdit and i really don't wanna mess things up. So i wanted to know that is it safe to run the Reqtificator on a mod pack after adding some extra armor and weapon mods that does not edit the leveled lists?
